Description
Description
Annona cherimola is a small tree species (up to 7 m tall) belonging to the Annonaceae family, native to the Andean regions of Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru, but currently cultivated as a fruit tree in tropical and subtropical regions around the world.
The fruit is known by several names, including chirimoia (from the Spanish chirimoya, and this from the Quechua chiri muya, “seed of the cold”), anona, nona, tamarinoia or even coração-de-negro (in the Azores), it is in fact, as in the other Annonaceae, a syncarpic grouping of fruits.
In South America, where the fruit is known as chirimoyo, the juice is highly appreciated and is sold in bars and restaurants.
Benefits
The custard apple has many nutritional benefits, despite not being one of the most well-known or consumed fruits in our country. It's considered a "super fruit," but it's not always easy to find.
It is a fruit where vitamins C and B6 predominate, some minerals (potassium, copper and magnesium), which are accompanied by an excellent dose of dietary fiber (2.3 grams per 100 grams of custard apple pulp) where insoluble fibers stand out to the detriment of soluble ones.
Two recent studies reveal the presence of two classes of phytochemicals in custard apple: the flavonoid class, represented by epicatechin, quercetin and kaempferol, and the acetogenin class, in high concentrations, a class that appears to have anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effects.
