Description
A source of beta-carotene, one of the best tanning aids, this diuretic plant stimulates the liver and helps combat insomnia and menstrual cramps. Basil is an annual herbaceous plant in the mint family, which is also lamiaceae (labiate), and there are about 150 varieties.
In health
It's a general tonic for the body and a digestive disinfectant. As an aperitif, it stimulates the liver, is a diuretic, and is refreshing. It's also used to relieve bronchial inflammation, intestinal gas, dizziness, nervous insomnia, gastric spasms, depression, and memory loss.
Studies on this plant indicate that it stabilizes blood sugar levels and can be used to control diabetes. When applied to the skin, however, it can cause allergies in more sensitive skin types. According to the American Cancer Society, a diet rich in vitamin A may reduce the risk of some types of cancer.
The benefits of basil tea
When made into a tea, basil relieves nervous headaches and regulates the menstrual cycle. When diluted with a few drops of water and inhaled, its essential oil can be used to treat chronic bronchitis and sinusitis. When diluted in sweet almond oil or olive oil, it can be used in massages to relieve rheumatic pain and joint inflammation.
