Salt of the Templars – Flower of Salt of Rio Maior

One of the most sea-loving characteristics of this mountainous region is the ease with which rainwater penetrates through the faults in the limestone rock, thus preventing the visible presence of hidden streams, which become underground. Some of these streams become salty as they pass through the rock salt deposit.

This deposit occupies approximately the area of Portuguese Estremadura, between Leiria and Torres Vedras, and was formed over millions of years.

As Salinas de Rio Maior são frutos de um capricho da Natureza. Uma mina de sal de fonte salina, extesa e profunda atravessada por uma corrente subterrânea, alimenta um poço de onde se extrai água sete vezes mais salgada que o do Oceano Atlântico.O documento mais antigo que se conhece data de 1177, mas pensa-se que o aproveitamento do sal-gema, já será feito a pré-história.
