Description
Horseshoes are a very well-known traditional Portuguese cake, which can be called different things depending on the region of the country – leg cakes, wedding cakes, groom's cakes, auction cakes or parrameiros. The names derive from the cakes' final shape or from festive occasions where they were a staple. Although their sale is now widespread, a few years ago, in addition to homemade recipes, horseshoes were primarily sold at fairs.
The recipe published here is the traditional one, with cinnamon, common throughout the country, although some people omit lemon. We initially published the recipe with the basic ingredients, considering that spices vary and, depending on the regional recipe, these dry cakes can be more or less seasoned – fennel, for example, is a key ingredient in some recipes, but not used in all regions.
