Peanut is a plant in the Fabaceae family. The peanut plant is a herbaceous plant with a short stem and compound, pinnate leaves containing four elliptical leaflets with alternate insertions. It has an abundant indumentum and a taproot measuring 30–50 cm deep. The flowers are small and yellowish and, after fertilization, penetrate the soil with the help of a structure called a gynophore and a phenomenon known as geocarpy, where the legumes develop underground. The fruit is a pod.
