Description
Broad beans originate from the Near East, according to the earliest archaeological remains dating back to six to seven thousand years BC. Their use as food later spread throughout the Mediterranean region, with the Roman Empire playing a key role in increasing their consumption. The maritime expansion of the Iberian kingdoms likely brought broad beans to the Americas. Today, their consumption is global.
The broad bean pod is shallow, elongated, and slightly curved, averaging seven centimeters in length. Inside the pods reside two to four shallow, kidney-shaped seeds, commonly referred to as broad beans. The seeds are usually green, though some varieties include colors such as white, red, purple, brown, or black. Broad beans have a starchy, potato-like flavor and a grainy, yet slightly buttery, texture.
